I don't know how or why, but even with all of the problems that I had when I was younger, I never expected a guy who was mistreating the girlfriend that he already had to be someone who would treat me better than he treated her just because I was me. I knew not to believe a guy who tried to excuse his bad behavior toward a woman with whom he already had a relationship by saying even more bad things about her, or who tried to make me feel like I was so much more special than his girlfriend that we would never have the problems as a couple that he had with her if we got together.
I don't know how I have always known that, but I'm glad that I have.
