"unhealthy-indeed unnatural-for women to work, write, vote, go to college, or participate in the public arena"

"Profoundly suspicious of passion, Enlightenment and post-Revolutionary writers argued that women had less sexual desire than men and thus were uniquely suited to be a civilising force; male passion would be controlled by the strength of woman's moral virtue."

The title and first sentence of this page are quotes from a paper called "Nymphomania:  The Historical Construction of Female Sexuality."  The paper, unfortunately for me because of the conglomerate's enjoyment of puns that degrade me, was written by Carol Groneman.

This is the Web address for it:

For everyone who thinks that many of the common assumptions about the supposedly biologically decided, psychosocial differences between men and women are rooted in real science rather than in antiquated ideas that served, and continue to serve, a patriarchy, the paper might dispel confusion.

Neither quote describes Ms. Groneman's opinion of women; she wrote them describing opinions about women that were created in the past.

Both quotes describe opinions about women that have supported the actions of everyone from harassers of women to rapists of women ever since they were formulated.

According to the second opinion, if men fail to control themselves, all of the blame rightfully falls on the women whose "civilising force" isn't strong enough to control them.

Yet, according to the opinion described in the title of this page, it is not only justifiable but moral and protective of society to accuse women of being emasculating if they tell men "No" about anything.  After all, according to that opinion, women are "unhealthy" and "unnatural" if we try to be participants in the world around us rather than agreeing to be confined to the roles of spectators and wound-binders for men.  If we don't heed the warnings to get out of the way, we deserve whatever we get; that's the message.

"You deserve to continue to be voyeuristically photographed because of what we saw when we first started voyeuristically photographing you" is my description of what seems to be the conglomerate's belief about me.  The conglomerate never stops propagating nonsense as fact while attempting to justify its predatory behavior.
