It's happened to me several times; someone with whom I have always been friendly all of a sudden says "Don't even talk to me" when I say "Hi" to her.
I never know which rumor is causing the sudden change unless she tells me, which she usually doesn't.
I also think that there are people who find it easier to decide all of a sudden that it's not worth it to be friendly to me when I am disliked by so many people, including staff, so they take offense at something that I say or do that a reasonable person wouldn't be offended by. They often decide, after weeks or months, that they would rather talk to me than not, but that doesn't mean that they won't do it again.
